our story

Since announcing our project and boarding a plane bound for the northern most inhabited place on the planet, people ask us, how, why, and who are you two that you guys can do this? Sometimes I manage to answer these questions with an elegant interpretation, other times, I ask myself the same thing. Like many great things in life, sometimes they seem too far off in an unrealistic place that dreaming is the closest you get to them. For us, it came down to taking a leap of faith for something we believed in, embracing the risks, a bit of manifested luck, cultivating our talents and honing our passions into an idea described in a single sentence.

Our project started much like anything else, one seemingly unachievable dream that hatched nine months ago. Over two pints of stout beer, we initially sketched out the idea on a bar napkin after a camping trip on Mt. Tamalpais, California. Surprisingly, our initial ideas ended up being the very foundation from which our project was built. I remember those first months of secret planning, the naive excitement and sheer force of adrenaline that kept pushing us to overcome the numerous obstacles that continued to present themselves. Only with a tremendous amount of planning, rearranging, risk, sacrifice and disappointment did we realize that we, two inspired young adults, could pack up our possessions into a storage unit and set out to simply create something tangible to show the world. On April 4th, 2012, Photographer Justin Lewis and I began a two year expedition to share how environments and traditional ways of life are at risk as human demands on the natural world increase.

Weaving our paired art mediums with the world’s current realities, we aim to contribute to the rise in global consciousness. With recent decades of rapid exponential change, the question remains, how is the human spirit adapting?
